Are the electrical components safe?

Boss Defrost’s water pump is UL certified, passing the highest measures for electrical safety. We recommend you plug Boss Defrost into a GFI/GFCI outlet for safety.

Boss Defrost is designed to be submerged under water and run efficiently for long periods of time.

What if my bag of sealed, frozen food breaks?

Things happen. If, while thawing, your bag of sealed food breaks, Boss Defrost comes with a long-handled bottle brush to scrub the inside of the gooseneck faucet.  For a deep clean, Boss Defrost is easily disassembled and re-assembled.

Boss Defrost is NSF certified and designed to meet the National Sanitation Foundation's strict food safety requirements.

According to USDA guidelines, frozen food must be in a leakproof package or plastic bag to thaw under running water.  We recommend all food being thawed with Boss Defrost is sealed.

What is the running water method?

The USDA sanctions four ways to safely thaw frozen food; “slacking'“, or the running water method, is one of the most widely practiced.  In a nutshell, sealed, frozen food is placed into a sink, submerged in cold tap water, then cold water is continuously run over the food until thawed.

The running water method means hundreds of gallons of cold, potable water flows over sealed food then runs down the drain until the food is thawed. Most people aren't aware of the staggering amount of potable water wasted each day in kitchens all over the world.

With each Boss Defrost in use, professional and home cooks alike are transforming a wasteful practice into a sustainable one. Check out our Boss Map!

Why is there a thermometer on Boss Defrost?

The USDA recommends that water temperature while thawing food should stay below 71F/21C.  Boss Defrost's thermometer helps cooks monitor water temperature.  For best results, Boss Defrost recommends starting with water in the 60F/16C range.

How much does it cost?

Boss Defrost costs $439.99 per appliance.  It is guaranteed for a year and pays for itself, on average, within three months.

What is the warranty on my device?

Boss Defrost has a one year warranty for any malfunctioning parts. If a component is to fail within the one year warranty, please email us at info@bossdefrost.com, send it back and we will address your issue.

How much water could we really conserve?

The average commercial kitchen wastes 32,000 gallons/month to slack frozen food, enough water to fill half an Olympic swimming pool.  That's just one restaurant.  The city of Denver alone has over 2,600 restaurants and there are thousands of other food service operations (hospital, K-12 schools, campus dining, grocery meat & seafood), so when we broaden our understanding of the scope of the water waste, it's staggering.

Boss Defrost reduces water needed for slacking from 32,000 gallons to about 450 gallons per month, per operation.  The potential water conservation is enormous.  What's even more exciting is that the water savings is immediate because Boss Defrost is plug-and-play. No installation costs!.

Will my cooks really use it?

Yes!  It’s easy to use, saves sink space, is easily sanitized, and conserves one of our most precious resources.  Most kitchens incorporate Boss Defrost into their daily prep routine within a week.

Cooks love that Boss Defrost is portable. It safely thaws large and small thawing tasks away from the sink.

Before you know it, you’ll hear cooks say, “Where’s the Boss Defrost?”

How often should Boss Defrost be cleaned and sanitized?

We recommend cleaning Boss Defrost after every use.  Plug in Boss Defrost then move it through the three-sink cleaning method: warm, soapy water; rinse; sanitizer.  Air dry.

Each Boss Defrost comes with a flexible, stainless steel nylon brush for deep cleaning the gooseneck faucet. Boss Defrost can be easily disassembled and re-assembled for deep cleaning.
